Romantic Venice - a fantastic city break
As my husband turned 40 in June, we managed to spend a few days in Venice without the children.
It was a very unique city, when you get to the outskirts you then get transported across the canal to your hotel either by water bus or water taxi. A ride on a gondola is a must and it is fascinating to hear some of the history behind the city. You can pay a bit more to have live music playing as you glide through the network of canals. There is plenty to see, some of our favourite places included St Mark's Square where we went up Campanile di San Marco (a Tower providing an amazing perspective of the City), the Rialto Bridge which has some great cafés, a buzzing market and Teatro La Fenice where we saw a wonderful opera. There was so much to see but we enjoyed relaxing and watching the world go by.
We stayed in the Hotel Ala, a traditional Venetian hotel which was minutes from the action but not too noisy. The staff were really friendly, the room was a great size with nice views over the canals and there was also a rooftop terrace which was open during the afternoons.
Venice has amazing cafés and restaurants as you would expect and lots of places to enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail, try the local drink - the ‘Venetian Cocktail’ made with Prosecco. In the evening, you can enjoy operas and plays, Jazz clubs, lots of different bars and even underground dance clubs. We enjoyed cocktails in the Hilton Molino Stucky Skyline bar, it has very contemporary feel with chill out music and amazing views over the city. There was also live acoustic music playing around the rooftop swimming pool.
Venice is a shopper’s paradise with just about every designer brand you can imagine, you will also find lots of souvenir shops selling masks which are the ultimate souvenir from Venice. We enjoyed walking around the city and discovering new streets and hidden gems, although we never seemed to walk back the same way it was fairly easy to get your bearings after a couple of days.
Venice is a lovely City and should be on everyone’s bucket list.
